#35 HeroQuest (1989)

Synopsis
Before there was Imperial Assault (…but after there was Dungeons and Dragons…) there was a grim dark fantasy game with only hairy (…or in HeroQuest’s case, waxed…) Barbarians…

Hrmm…Anyway, we all know HeroQuest by now and its impact on my childhood. Credited with getting me into Warhammer, but unlike that game it was self-contained in a box. It also come with a lot of little plastic pieces and cardboard furniture.

Basically let me say that by today’s standards HeroQuest is not that good of a game, BUT one that has a great theme that everyone can enjoy (4 fantasy heroes questing in a dungeon to defeat the evil necromancer), simple, relatively quick and one in which your imagination can go wild.

#34 Soccer City: The Beautiful Game (2013)

Synopsis
Soccer is, as we are all aware, the world’s biggest sport in every sense. Surprisingly then that there has not been a very highly regarded game over the years which either simulates or abstracts the excitement, strategy and tactics of the beautiful game.

Arguably Subbuteo is the most well-known Soccer game, but this is a dexterity game and is restricted to people who can flick often and fast!

It was a barren wasteland when it comes to fun simulation that was until a Spanish company produced Soccer City: the Beautiful Game. I always think what makes a good sports game is even if you do not know anything about the sport, the game should be designed so you intuitively take actions that people who know the sport would in your situation – Soccer City does just that. Positioning of players (both attacking and defensive), long range shots, set pieces and even beating players ‘one on one’, it’s all here. This is paired with a great art style which brings the golden years to the tabletop.

What else can I say, it’s the a true representation of ‘Joga  Bonita’!

Synopsis
This game needs no introduction. This game reminds me of Christmas holidays with the family and when the deputy grandfather infamously shot his sheriff grandson after some goading from his renegade daughter!

Bang! The Dice game is a light game that is heavy on laughs and tension whenever it is played

Synopsis
Another game made by prolific strategy war gaming company ‘GMT Games’, however, this one is about town planning!

The game itself does have some problems (i.e. a bit too random to make a proper strategy) and a bit long and clunky, but it’s a game that feels like town planning (which is a random, clunky, boring profession J).

It has development approvals, different building types, zoning and the ability to hold city office which give you different benefits. The game is great at mapping the growth of built form from a tiny town to a metropolis!

Gebirgsjagers - Chain of Command

Hi All I have been a long time table-top gaming enthusiast but have never really collected until recently. Something that I have never done due to time, talent and direction is painted. I suppose for me the collecting went hand in hand with the painting and as I could not paint, I did not collect and therefore I did not game. Well last year I decided to try my hand at painting. While I continue to learn a lot and my efforts are not the best I am a lot more confident that if I try I may be able to get a 'table-top' standard I am happy with. Anyway last year I began to paint some German Gebirgsjagers, however I noticed that there is no list in Chain of Command for them yet. They are quite similar to regular German infantry so with a bit of research and CoCulator help I settled on the below - Comments appreciated. Germany Heer Gebirgsjager Rifle Platoon (Pre 1942) Introduction The German Gebirgsjager (mountain infantry) of World War Two found its origins in...

Operation Mercury #1 - Campaign Introduction and Structure (Chain of Command)

Hi All, As stated in my last post I am hoping to play a Chain of Command campaign with my friend. Please see below for the campaign structure: 1.0 Overview This campaign will be played using the Chain of Command Rules produced by Too Fat Lardies. 1.1 Setting The campaign is set between 20 May 1941 and 1 June 1941. The campaign starts with the German airborne landings and concludes with the allied withdrawal to Egypt. The campaign abstracts the western part of the Battle of Crete and focuses on engagements between German and Greek forces. Map of German landings during Operation Mercury (image courtesy of Wikipedia) 1.2 Objective The Greeks win the campaign if one of the following conditions is met: Defeating the Germans twice in a row in Battle I - Decisive Victory If the Germans have not defeated the Greeks in Battle V in a total of 9 games - Allied Tactical Victory The Germans win the campaign if one of the following conditions is met: Defeat the ...

Chain of Command - Table Top Game

Hi All, Chain of Command , produced by Too Fat Lardies is one of the many World War Two table top games currently on the market. While it does not have the following of Flames of War or Bolt Action, it is still a very good game. Chain of Command Rule Book (image courtesy of Too Fat Lardies) At this stage, Chain of Command only covers the main combatants of the European Theatre but there have been some efforts to branch out to the more esoteric with army lists produced for Japanese, Italians and Belgians. Chain of Command varies a little from some of the more commercial games on the market in a few ways. Firstly it is partially without a points system. The core platoons are devised by actual structural organisation and training of that nation for that time period. Balancing in the game is then taken care of by 'support points' in which the nation with the weaker base organisation can take a few extra things to even up the battle. In reality these support points even u...
