#30 Space Hulk (1989)
|
||
|
|
|
Synopsis
|
||
Space Hulk, like its
fantasy sibling HeroQuest, was quite a pivotal game in my childhood. I never
really played Space Hulk by the rules I just loved playing with the
miniatures and the pieces, making a web of corridors invested with ‘bad guys’
Space Hulk is a game
where one player plays as the heavily armed and armoured super soldiers,
while the other player controls the endless alien hordes. This all takes
place aboard a ‘space hulk’ – a large spaceship (or numerous space ships
crumpled together in the warp) which is floating thru space (and is the
vehicle for the aliens to spread (and consume) new planets). There is an
asymmetry to the two sides. The humans have plenty of ranged firepower but
struggle to manoeuvre in the cramped corridors, while the aliens are quick
but have to get up close!
Both players play
through a number of mission with the human player trying to achieve
objectives and the alien player stopping them.
While it is a fun, quick
game that is not why it is on the list. It is the theme, it really is
evocative and makes you feel like you are a part of this nightmare. The game
even has a mechanic where the alien player doesn’t place models that are out
of site of the human on the board, rather placing ‘blips’ on the radar. When
revealed these blips could be nothing or a mass of aliens :O

#29 Stuffed Fables (2018)
|
||
|
|
|
Synopsis
|
||
Stuffed fables is a
story game that revolves around a child’s storybook.
The story starts with a
little girl’s first night in her own bed away from her parents. In her sleep,
her toys are tasks with protecting her from others from the ‘land of the
forgotten’. This game, along with the game board, revolve around a storybook
and takes places over a number of chapters.
Once you play through
the story once, you have learned all of the games secrets but the writing is
excellent and really engages you to a time in life we all have went through.
The gameplay itself is simple and lends itself to being played by parents
with a younger family as well.
Finally the art style
really caps off this different and distinct game.

#28 Pandemic (2008)
|
||
|
|
|
Synopsis
|
||
Pandemic is a game where
players try to control a global epidemic by curing the four disease before
they consume the world.
Pandemic is a well-known
cooperative game that is quick, deep, engaging and tense. Pandemic is the
game in which Pandemic Legacy (early in my top 50) was based on.

#27 Black Orchestra (2016)
|
||
|
|
|
Synopsis
|
||
Black Orchestra is
another cooperative game, but this time players are part of a cabal who are
trying to overthrown or kill Hitler.
The game really brings
you into the period with the artwork and theme. It’s a grim theme, knowing
that your role is to plot to kill someone in all these different ways…then
again we are talking about one of the biggest (if not the) biggest monster in
history.
The game is also based
on a map of Europe which expands and declines in size based on Germany’s
historical military rise and decline of the late 30’s and early to mid 40’s.
Therefore picking the right moment to execute your plot feels very tense – do
you go early when you are not fully prepared but an opportunity presents itself
or do you wait it out and set up the perfect plot but risk failing or worse,
being arrested by the Gestapo!
The game can run a
little long but turns move pretty fast to keep everyone engaged in this
gripping WW2 game.

#26 Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries (2007)
|
||
|
|
|
Synopsis
|
||
I won’t spend too long
on this one as, chances are, if you have played any board games post monopoly
you would have heard (if not played) Ticket to Ride.
Ticket to Ride: Nordic
Countries is a 2-3 player version of the original game. Most of the mechanics
remain the same. What I like about Ticket to ride is that it is simple,
quick, push your luck and intuitive. The skill level of someone who plays
often is not that different to someone who is new (relatively speaking).
Therefore Ticket to Ride reprenets a game which I can get non-board gamers
into (or to play) board games.
I am not sure what it is
about Ticket to Ride that makes it so engrossing for the average person…must
be the set collection of cards which may remind us of the simple card games
we played as children?
